Acqui, the Roman Aquae Statiellae, has had since more than two thousand years the water at the centre of its fate: the “hot” and therapeutic one gushing out in the centre of the city, among elegant buildings with ornamented façades, and the other one, as hot and precious as the first one, which, in the parks beyond Bormida River, with various emergencies, helps in creating the “lake of the springs”.
Hot water, hyperthermal, rich in sulphides and salt coming from ancient seas, which gives the mud those therapeutic properties which made it so renowned and it’s also useful to be inhaled in many cases of diseases of the respiratory tracts; and also, in case of diseases relating to gynaecology, venous stenoses, even to the body slight blemishes, such as the cellulite, and to the skin ones by leaving the face with a healthy glow.
During the centuries Acqui has been growing around its pools made of beneficial water and its thermal complexes. In fact the city planning is extended to enclose its springs and, in the magnificence of gardens and parks, as in the balanced elegance of squares, arcades and open galleries, of buildings with relief or decorated frontispieces shows the classical influence which has always been deeply rooted into the Spa architecture.
Waters gushing out of the near Ligurian mountain range, even if they are no more thermal ones, concur to the variedness and the beauties of Aquesana landscape. This is the case of Bormida waters – a river consecrated to Bormanus, a celtic god of the springs – which flow down among towers and terracing of the Langa; or of Erro stream limpid and foaming waters crossing the Appennine rocky valleys in the background of green woods and meadows. Waters flowing slowly, with exposed gravelly dry river beds and cane-brakes, those of Belbo river reminding of Fenoglio and Pavese, which, from the steep hills of “The Moon and the bonfires”, flow into the easy slopes and vineyards of Alto Monferrato.
A landscape with a variety of charming aspects to catch with all the senses: with the sense of smell, in order to catch the concentrated floral and fruity scent of its aromatic wines, or with the taste, due to the many kinds of food, coming from the bourgeois or popular tradition, from the Ligurian or Monferrato area, offered by the rich variety of Aquesana food.
